Ellen Hodgetts - artist profile
I am inspired in many ways, including the places I live, modern culture and music. My current art practice is focussed on fluid acrylic techniques. I love the energy and action required to work with fluid acrylics. It’s a combination of fast-paced laying down of colour, and then the patience of building layer upon layer to create beautiful colour combinations. I want my work to be seen in sunlight and I often use interference or reflective paints to create light interplay. This means that the work is dynamic and can have a completely different mood depending on the light source.
I love experimenting and pushing my boundaries and comfort zone, so I use other techniques including still life oil paintings, portraiture, drawing and mixed media works. I also make colourful fashion jewellery based on my artwork designs.
I am an ex.counsellor and practicing artist member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. I have exhibited work in many Academy exhibitions over the last few years, most recently a joint multi-media audio and visual exhibition with my husband called 'Join the Club', based around an album launch. Other exhibitions include Solo 38 where my husband and I took up 10 metres of wall space. I was a second place prize winner in the 2014 Wellington Emerging Artist Awards, as well as a finalist in the 2012 and 2013 awards. I was a top 10 finalist in the 2014 Unleash Art Competition. In addition I have exhibited work in group exhibitions at the Artrium Gallery, Pataka, NZ ArtShow and various other art awards and exhibitions. My husband and I held a very successful joint exhibition in The Thistle Hall Gallery in 2013.
